Non-Profit NGO

last update: 22nd of February, 2010

The NGO VFAVR

It was founded in 2000 with the objective of development of the close-by and wider region around Auroville. This engagement takes place in close cooperation with the NGO "Auroville International Deutschland" e.V., whose objective is the promotion of the Auroville project.

Objectives and Activities of VFAVR

It is the objective of VFAVR –according to its statutes – to contribute to the development of the indigenous population in the neighbourhood of Auroville, a model town promoted by UNESCO for its ideal of human unity. The agricultural region around Auroville, situated south of Chennai (formerly Madras) in the state of Tamil Nadu near to the coastal town Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry), belongs to the underdeveloped regions of Tamil Nadu. Most inhabitants of this region belong to the lowest casts of the traditional Indian society or are even socalled Harijans, i.e. "untouchable ones".

Especially there shall be promoted the efforts of the villagers for self-help in areas related to economy, ecology, primary and secondary schools, vocational training, medical and social services. Existing self-help-initiatives in these areas as well as the creation of new self-help-groups shall be supported.

Whenever possible our development aid shall be given in cooperation with the consultants for village development of the Auroville project.

The funds for the development projects shall be raised on one side as donations from private persons and commercial companies, on the other side funds shall be applied for from foundations, NGOs and public governmental institutions like the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany.

The Auroville Project

Auroville has been created 1968 in South-India as an experiment of an international city and community. The vision of the project consists in realizing an urban model of human unity and living understanding among nations by cohabitation of people of all nations enjoying all equal rights. It aims at realizing human unity in daily life.

In Auroville there live and work now about 2.000 residents from more than 40 countries.  Auroville is situated in a rural region and radiates its influence by its existence to the surrounding Indian villages with a population of about 70.000 people. The development of this backward region, partially still living in great undersupply, is considered as an indivisible part of the development of Auroville.

The manifold programes of village development are predominantly coordinated by the Auroville Village Action Trust (AVAT). Important target groups of the programes of village development and self help projects are women and young people.  However in the evening programs people of all ages and of both genders are invited.
